Our Farmers

King County has more than 12,000 acres of farmland saved under the Farmland Preservation Program. Just 10 acres of rich valley soil can produce nearly six tons of mixed vegetables each year on a well-run sustainable farm. Farms for Life acts as a bridge between farmers who want to grow more to get this wonderfully nutritious food to people, and the economic realities of needing to cover production costs. This bridge helps farmers stay in business, which in turn helps preserve our valuable farmland. One acre of fertile farmland can produce more than 100,000 heads of lettuce per year.

"I look at this as another way to become a positive part of community and enhance awareness of why local farming is important to a wider range of people. Farms for Life is the pipeline for local farmers to distribute locally grown fresh food for those who do not have access. We can sell some of our produce to Farms for Life at a discount and still recover our production costs."
